A word is a run of letters or numbers. Contractions such as "don't" and hyphenated words such as "well-known" count as one word, and punctuation on its own is ignored.
Characters with spaces counts everything you typed, including spaces, tabs and line breaks. Characters without spaces leaves all whitespace out. Most limits, such as X posts and SMS, count spaces.
Reading time assumes an average adult reads about 200 words per minute, and speaking time assumes about 130 words per minute, which is a comfortable pace for a talk or voice-over.
